Bruges is definitely a must on any visit to Belgium. It's about an hour by train from Brussels. There you can get an apartment next to the canal and think about the mysteries of the universe while staring at the river and the boats go by. A penny for my lady friend, Marna's thoughts!

The canals run throughout Bruges and a canal tour is recommended.

The central part of Bruges is still paved with cobble stones and car travel is restricted. So you have to go by foot, bicycle or by horse drawn cart.

As normal in most of Europe there are still a number of the original buildings standing and most have small cafes on the ground floor.

The other very important thing and for which Belgium is famous is Chocolate. My kind of place!

This was one of the more interesting signs I saw in Bruges which the Afrikaans speaking visitors would appreciate. The direct translation into English is something like "The Depressed House Doctor".
