China

Beijing the city which never sleeps.

China

One of the more interesting business cards I received while in Beijing. Anyone have a idea what a "The foot bottom cares the massage" might be?

China

Beijing still have stores which can be truly classified as department stores. In almost all of them the price is negotiable (up to 50% less than the initial price), and one of the best tactics is to walk away. This is the hustle and bustle at Ya Shu.

China

One of the places to visit is the Forbidden City, the original palace of the Emperor. It is huge with some lovely surrounding parks and canals.

China

The entrance to the Forbidden City as seen from the infamous Tiananmen Square.

China

You will see these two lions at the entrance of almost every building. The one on the right is the female with a lion cub at her paw and the one on the right is the male with a crown under his paw.

China

The one must, is the Great Wall. It is amazing to see the scale of the structure. It goes on (Badaling) ...

China

... and on (Simatai).

China

And just to proof that I did climb the wall (Simatai). We spent a painful couple of hours to climb the wall, only to discover that there is a lift to the top!! (Photo by Raynell De Jager)

China

And when you visit the wall you must of course climb it (Badaling). Just remember if you visit it during autumn/winter it could be freezing there even if the weather is fine in Beijing, as me and Marna discovered. (Photo by Barend Hawkins)

China

Made it! Barend Hawkins, one of my colleagues (Badaling).

China

The principle form of transport in China is still the humble bicycle.

China

Weekends it is a time to relax in one of the many parks in Beijing and play some Chinese checkers.

China

The other thing for which China is well know, is the various delicatessen which you can enjoy there (Wang Fu Jing Street). Like in this sample some scorpions, silk worm pupa and something which looks like a "koringkriek". Yum!

China

Every time someone visits, I have to climb the wall again! Lucky me. Here with Abdullah, Ahmad, and Xiao Li.

China

The other must in Peking (Beijing) is of course Peking Duck. Here the "experts" (Ahmad and Abdullah) are just checking if the chef is cutting the duck correctly.

China

The temple of Heaven. This is a very interesting place, lots of open space and gardens. You will also find a number of Chinese dancing, playing traditional instruments, playing Chinese checkers, etc. Lots of activities. Worth a visit.
